Oct 19, 2008 - The specimen sits on the protective glass cover of the imager chip. You are seeing the shadows of the specimen on the imaging sensor. The cardboard circle lets only direct light from the LED hit the specimen, blocking all reflections off the sides of the PVC tube which would otherwise cause a fuzzy image.
