May 31, 2008 - how many entertainers are saints?
jimcoats Says:
Jun 2, 2008 - Fair comment, I guess serial philandering went with the territory. The same was probably true of other soul icons like Jackie Wilson, Al Green and Teddy Pendergrass, whose indiscretions caught up with them at the hands of scorned women. Even so, if you read Guralnick's book (recommended), the casual way the author passes over this character trait does jar and slightly diminish my great admiration for Sam Cooke, who in every other respect, really had it all.

Jun 2, 2008 - I read both biographies. Walked away even more impressed by his accomplishments in a very rough and racist business. But the philandering comes with our soul icons, rock icons, classical icons, country icons, jazz icons, etc.,
jimcoats Says:
Jun 3, 2008 - Can't argue with you - my other musical heroes, - John Lennon, Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley, weren't exactly paragons of virtue either. Flawed individuals, great artists...

Jun 3, 2008 - Fair enough but this is the real world. Cops beast their wives and rip off dealers. The athletes whose pictures are on your childrens walls are drug riddled rapists. The Air Force warriors have tailhook, Priests rape, Ministers have gay prostitutes and smoke speed. Politicians...

Jun 3, 2008 - picked this because i heard this guy on allmemphismusic, long with some of these others. I thought this would be about the music! anyhow this guy sounds like that Guy. who prob. will be a saint heaven help him
jimcoats Says:
Jun 4, 2008 - Politicians...? Even JFK and MLK allegedly played around - and let's not go to Clinton! Here in UK, philandering is less of an issue with our heads of state although the grey-as-coaldust John Major famously had an affair with high-profile female politician Edwina Currie. The point with Sam Cooke is that the guy obviously was flawed in his outlook towards marital fidelity and paid the ultimate price. I take your point about athletes, cops, priests etc but a thousand wrongs don't make a right.

Jun 11, 2008 - what is tailhook?
entity3sf Says:
Jun 12, 2008 - It was a huge scandal and legal/criminal case involving hazing/sexual abuse, and generally un-gentlemanly annual "party" thrown by the Navy carrier aviators of the Tailhook "Association." In 1992 is disgraceful debauchery and rape party was finally exposed. It had been going on since 1986. Navy aviators passed unsuspecting female visitors down a gauntlet, grabbing their breasts and buttocks, attempting to strip off their clothes, and jeering and taunting. Google it. Alot more happened.

Jun 28, 2008 - CaesarRompus, I dunno but it sounds to be one from the 1st group he was with, "The Soul Stirrers". I have a couple of songs w/Sam from that time and they are pure work of arts. So check.

Jun 29, 2008 - I was an infant when he passed...My parents played his music all the time and my mom went to school with him, here in Chicago....The Sam Cooke story has many angles and lessons for everyone. When speaking of someone with this kind of magnitude, by default, I choose to think of (and speak of) the good legacy that lingers on; what a rare occurrence in ones lifetime his blessed "multi-pronged" gifts were. The moves he was making and his potential for even greater success leaves one only wondering.
