There are two main types of exercise: aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic exercises like swimming, jogging and cycling increase the body's need for oxygen, which is why you breathe faster and your heart rate increases while you're doing them. Anaerobic exercises like sprinting and weightlifting can only be done for a short amount of time because these require more oxygen than the body can supply.
