Feb 23, 2008 - Corbett was not a racist in no way shape or form. He never prejiduced against the black people. When John L. Sullivan wouldnt fight Peter Jackson because he was black, Corbett did. As a respectful opponent, Corbett won a 61 round draw. Dont tell me that Corbett was racist. He was a good man.

dorsi68 Says:

Feb 23, 2008 - Corbett was a good man , but was racist. Corbett did want to fight Jackson when he won the title , but his handlers and promoters would not let him. Maybe you should watch the Jefferies and Johnson fight and read what he was saying to Johnson. Again , this was the sign of the times back than to be racist and although its very wrong ... it was what it was

BoxingManiac Says:

Feb 29, 2008 - Corbett probably was only racist because if he wasnt, well everybody would have hated him. Shit, times were fierce back then, I would have been afraid to not be racist. Corbett was a good man and fought black people, unlike some champions. John L. Sullivan would not fight Peter Jackson because he did not think that a colored man should be competing for such a title. Sullivan was racist, but he was still a good man. I think that he might be one of the best boxers ever lived. Same thing with

simpsonsfan2007 Says:

Apr 1, 2008 - Maybe not muscle-wise, but as far as wills go, they are very much strong. I would know, I'm John L's great-great-great nephew.

simpsonsfan2007 Says:

Apr 1, 2008 - That means we're related somehow--he's my great-great-great uncle!

assblaster17 Says:

May 11, 2008 - My great-great-great uncle had a secret relationship with sullivan. He opened up the back door plenty of times

May 16, 2008 - corbett DID NOT WIN it was a DRAW..... THATS MEANS NO ONE WINS. LEARN YOUR FACTS "BOXINGMANIAC"

BoxingManiac Says:

May 20, 2008 - Corbett KNOCKED SULLIVAN OUT in the 23rd Round. Totally a draw, laying on the ground for 10 seconds. Learn YOUR facts. dick

BoxingManiac Says:

May 25, 2008 - or if you were talking about the 61 rounder with Peter Jackson, it was not a draw, it was a no contest.

battenwood Says:

Jun 7, 2008 - It's probably useless to try to reason with certain posters here because I'm sure that some of them would argue that John Brown was really a racist. I believe that actions matter more than words and to me it says more about Corbett that he fought blacks than what he yelled from Jeffries' corner, trying to make Johnson lose his cool. He knew Jeffries needed all the help he could get. Also, people change. LBJ was a typical seg politician but in the White House he became a civil rights progressive.

revolutionofhonor Says:

Jun 18, 2008 - Tat wasn't his family dipshits, Its him and Jeffries before the Johnson fight.

JRMatthews23 Says:

Jul 8, 2008 - Hey Simpsonfan2007, we should talk. I'm also a direct descendent of John L. His great-great-great nephew, have documents and photos to back it up. His last living direct relative that I knew of is my great- aunt, here in Phx (90 yrs old).

Ebuverthebicepcurler Says:

Jul 11, 2008 - Maybe you should fight along the mississipi

Greker Says:

Jul 13, 2008 - And Jim Corbett? This part is included in the movie about Jack Johnson (unforgivable Blackness)

Greker Says:

Jul 13, 2008 - You defend Sullivan and Jeffries but you attack Johnson and Ali? Come on, man

andrewr62 Says:

Jul 14, 2008 - Although the bout was officially a no contest it was a huge "victory" for Corbett as he was much less experiencd at the time and much lighter than Jackson. Jackson was highly favored to KO the upcomming Corbett. It was the turning point of both of their careers.

irishinohiotm Says:

Jul 18, 2008 - Wow, you are a descendant too. Me too. John L. is my great great granduncle.

BoxingJackal Says:

madmax8903 Says:

Sep 19, 2008 - The old Boston Strong Boy still looks dangerous, if you ask me. A real ten-job man, as they used to say in Hoxton.

jeanienormand Says:

Sep 21, 2008 - JR. I just came upon this posting, my dad was John L.'s third cousin. My dad's first cousin was Jim Matthews. We're in the outskirts of St. Louis, MO. Grandma was Agnes Shea, her mom was Anne Sullivan, John L.'s aunt. Know any other family here? I have some geneaology, I would love to find other relatives. I am 49, female, but like you, a descendant, our last name is Monk.

trulucks Says:

Sep 29, 2008 - That is so cool, I'm so jealous. That makes you the direct descendant of the "hand that shook the world." I wonder if you picked up any of your great-uncles flamboyant traits.
