The original west cornerstone of the District of Columbia was surveyed and placed by Andrew Ellicott in 1791. In 1847, District land on the southern side of the Potomac River returned to Virginia. Today the stone marks the common boundary point of Virginia's Arlington Co., Fairfax Co., and independent City of Falls Church.
