http://www.ted.com Ocean explorer Robert Ballard takes us on a mindbending trip to hidden worlds underwater, where he and other researchers are finding unexpected life, resources, even new mountains. He makes a case for serious exploration and mapping. Google Ocean, anyone?

Jun 4, 2008 - The reason to his first question is because you cannot put Satellites in the ocean, there are no planet killing asteroids in the ocean, below 100 or so feet, there is not a viable (potential) market for tourism. Rockets are expensive, conventional submarines are less so. I love to dive, and I love the sea, but the stars are the new frontier.

Jun 5, 2008 - wow... the apparent intelligence behind tht comment... im in awe..

Jun 5, 2008 - This guy makes some great points right from the beginning. Why is NASA so "important"? answer: Residual religious based ideas. Why do we "need" to find extraterrestrial life? Answer: to prove or disprove religious and philosophical beliefs. We waste piles of cash to prove/disprove religious and philosophical beliefs while we ignore the riches of the oceans! Not all NASA spending is waste. Just most of it. Near Earth Object and solar research are both desperately needed.

Jun 10, 2008 - Evangelical passion! Great. He is proposing to colonize the oceans of our planets. It sounds outlandish but one great man once said that every new idea goes through 3 phases. 1)it's ridiculed 2)it's opposed 3)it's self evident

orinocojones Says:

Jun 10, 2008 - Maybe if they dive deep they'll find Dick Cheney's heart? : )

theycutheyknowu Says:

Jun 12, 2008 - The reason why they look into the heavens and not the ocean is because they dont want us to know the secrets, thats why we have secret societys like freemasons, illuminati and bohemians the higher up in the degree they are the more information they get to know plus to work with NASA to know even more.

intrepgun Says:

Jun 12, 2008 - fat chance. XD

Jun 24, 2008 - ya thats what i was thinking. you got -5 thumbs which is silly. thats what happens when a bunch of close minded scientists get on here. people who think they know it all. ask why we dont go down there. maybe the movie the abyss wasnt all fake? maybe they dont want us to know the earth actually expands and grows, maybe they just want to keep us stupid and ignorant. so way to go on the thumbsdown guys, real smart out of the box creativity. watch the one about school kills creativity.

Jun 28, 2008 - i'm a fan of space science. i make time everyday to look at the new discoveries in the universe. but, like this guy, i love the ocean too. it's mystery is swimming in imagination. i watch deep sea dives like guys watch porn. i'm captivated and rooting for more. every time i check up on oceanic discoveries i'm beside myself. with all the different types of environments in one kind of medium (sea water) i'm amazed with life. bravo. i thank those brave enough to explore our nearest mysteries. :)

vetrean Says:

Jun 30, 2008 - creativity is not the same as delusion...unfounded theories are not the same as thinking outside of the box. there's a reason why occam's razor is utilized so frequently.

BinaryReader Says:

Jul 5, 2008 - I think there is more funding and interest in space over the ocean simply because, the ocean is finite, space is seemingly infinite. Perhaps its the underlying nature of life to look up and out, for places to spread, we all originated from the oceans, so perhaps there's a sense of, "been there, done that" built into us. just a thought.

cobchob Says:

Jul 6, 2008 - im 10 and im smarter than you

notarecordplayer Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - but not more humble

Jul 20, 2008 - The ocean...man... what a deep subject. Like, whoa.

WhatAmEye Says:

Jul 20, 2008 - he looks great for 66!!

Crimzors Says:

Jul 29, 2008 - People should see the deep sea videos that are out there, they examine our ocean and emphasize what he has stated. The amount of creatures out there, and the adaptations they have done to survive down there is astronomical.

wikedawesome Says:

Jul 30, 2008 - I would give anything in the world to be a part of this exploration.

kitkat042803 Says:

Aug 4, 2008 - more funding and interest in space ,simple space is easy nothing there but the sea is crazy and unknown as we know ppl are scared of the unknown

1schwererziehbar1 Says:

Aug 10, 2008 - a man speaking fifteen minutes without a break with such immense and positive passion. you only get that at TED.

waheex Says:

Aug 14, 2008 - good point but to say that there is noting in space is untrue

kitkat042803 Says:

Aug 15, 2008 - waheex very true but in what the nasa group has spent and what do we get nothing may as well be nothing

unixbomber Says:

Aug 16, 2008 - Robert Ballard is awesome.
