This clip is from a 1970s British film, Stop That Noise, aimed at shipyard workers. Hearing loss from work is still a major problem in many trades today. The Laborers' Health and Safety Fund of North America is a great resource for information and best practices for noise control for construction - http://www.lhsfna.org/index.cfm?objectID=F829FED8-D56F-E6FA-99A3B1B04E173AC8 . The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a useful software package for demonstrating the effects of noise-induced hearing loss. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator runs on a Windows-based PC with sound capabilities, and allows the user to select different durations and levels of noise exposure while "hearing" the effects on a variety of foreground and background sounds. Go to http://www.holmessafety.org/hlsim/ to try it out.
