Cjthemusicman requested Cabaret, and when he did, he thought we might only do the second part of this unique song, which is somewhat commonly known as "North Ontario". But our goal is to produce vistories for Gordon Lightfoot's ENTIRE collection, so doing half a song was out of the question. This one is definitely two songs in one, with the trick being to tie the two together. As is the case with many of Lightfoot's songs, interpretations will vary, and debates will continue over intentions, locations and content. Maybe this is what keeps his music fresh and his audiences both loyal and new... ~~ Lynn Link For online discussions about Gordon Lightfoot, his music and related topics http://www.corfid.com/ Link to Gordon Lightfoot website maintained by Wayne Francis http://www.lightfoot.ca/ Link to buy Gordon Lightfoot CD's http://www.bestprices.com/cgi-bin/vli... Cabaret (Summer Side of Life) 5:49 All I can see is the sea and the sky And the sky is blue and the sea is green Yesterday's a cabaret Gowns of satin on ladies gay Yesterday's a cabaret Sounds of laughter on faces grey Yesterday's a carousel Catch the ring and all will be well From the coast of California Up to the Oregon border I've thumbed a thousand miles I guess Sitting in a roadside diner The big trucks rollin' by I don't seem to know at times what's best And still I'd like to tell her That I miss her so In north Ontario If you're drivin' east to Reno Or north to Mendocino I hope you find your rainbow's end This highway is my rainbow And though I might regret it I'm so glad I said it way back when And still I'd like to tell her That I miss her so In north Ontario Note to All Viewers: This Tribute Channel is for the sole purpose of sharing the experience of the magnificent music of Gordon Lightfoot. No production is being sold or will ever be offered for sale. This is a true labour of love based on the "reasonable use" provisions of the Copyright Act. tj The Lightfoot Tribute Team

Sep 6, 2008 - Thanks Lynn!!! I love the photos in the "break", fabulous tribute to the never-to-be-forgotten Zippo legacy. Thanks for the personal touch for me. The dream-y sequence in the beginning is nice, you did a great job on a very difficult song. Deb

Sep 6, 2008 - I didn't like Cabaret until I previewed this song for Lynn and the rest of the team. I listened to the music, and watched the pictures as they unfolded and I got a sense of feeling for this song. A comment from TJ was that Gord had been living in California, and it was likely this song was derived from his disillusionment of life in fast paced SoCal, and he just wanted to return to his beloved Ontario. I think this is quite possible. Now I really like this song, and I think Lynn did a great job.

Sep 6, 2008 - A week ago, Cabaret was not on my "Best of Lightfoot" list - watching you research and develop this vistory Lynn has taught me to take more time with a Lightfoot song like Cabaret - and so I have come to enjoy this counter-intuitive combination of a carousel in LA and a "belle" in North Ontario. Thank you Lynn for guiding me from darkness to the Light(foot)! lol tj The Lightfoot Tribute Team

Sep 6, 2008 - Oh! I sit here with goose-bumps on my arms, watching this wonderful creation! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating this majestic video to accompany a truly unique song from Gordon. It contains so many wonderful images, that I don't know where to begin! The carousel, cabaret, my lovely Georgian Bay, maps of my home, the Chi-cheemaun (the ferry we were on just last weekend!). I will be eternally grateful Lynn! You captured this song perfectly! THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL THE TEAM! Chuck

Sep 6, 2008 - I am so glad cj requested this because it's a new one for me. And it's a new one for my playlist. :) What an introspective song this seems to be. As a writer, I can only imagine what Gord went through to put this down on paper. Your team did a great job in putting pictures to Gords amazing words. 5x5 stars!!

workinprogress82 Says:

Sep 6, 2008 - cj, Your heart-felt, enthusiastic, and appreciative response, coupled with this amazing vid, are what I love about the YouTube community!

MyLaydy Says:

Sep 6, 2008 - Phew!! I'm so glad you're happy with it Chuck. This song grew on me - maybe faster than it grew on the others, but grow it did! The hardest part was trying to come up with a way to tie the two portions together - to make them belong together. One of these times, I just might hop on that Chi-Cheemaun when I'm in Owen Sound, and visit you on your Manitoulin Island. I'll bring the donuts from Tim's. ;) ~~ Lynn

cjthemusicman Says:

Sep 7, 2008 - That's a deal! You bring the donuts, and we'll supply the deck chairs and the ambience! And we're less than a half hour from the ferry terminal in South Baymouth. I'm so happy that I decided to log on last night.....and when I discovered that you had already made the vistory, I was elated. What a great way to end the evening! I always enjoyed the little 'mistake?' between the 2 parts....is that his pick dropping to the floor?....and then Gord's small release of his breath....a nice touch.

cjthemusicman Says:

Sep 7, 2008 - tj - I mentioned to Lynn that this great song and many other Lightfoot classics kept me company on a road trip to BC in the 70's. It will always mean so much to me.....thank you. And your comment above is so well put! I realize that constantly saying 'thank you' might be getting a bit stale, but I don't know what else to say for all your team's genuine hard work and the constant enjoyment you bring to so many! Just know that it will never be forgotten.....Cj

MyLaydy Says:

Sep 7, 2008 - Deck chairs and ambience sounds wonderful! :) There are two camps with regard to the "little 'mistake'". There are those that believe that it's a cigarette lighter followed by the inhale-exhale, and others who believe it's the opening of a beer can and the satisfied sigh after the first swallow. The debate continues! lol

071949 Says:

Sep 7, 2008 - New to me; yet another great song from GL, and other great "vistory" from the team.

071949 Says:

Sep 7, 2008 - oops, typo! should read "...and another..."

jhill2704 Says:

Sep 8, 2008 - I really like this song, but never understood it-can someone educate me here on what its about?/good job on the video as always :)

MyLaydy Says:

Sep 10, 2008 - Thanks Joshua. I can only give you my interpretation which is that Gordon had been in California, was disenchanted with it, and longed to be back in North Ontario with someone he left there. I don't think they parted on the best of terms. "And though I might regret it, I'm so glad I said it way back when" But the only one to know for sure is Gordon Lightfoot! :) ~~ Lynn

cjthemusicman Says:

Sep 13, 2008 - This may become a Saturday evening ritual.....watching and listening to this powerful vistory from GL.

cjthemusicman Says:

Sep 16, 2008 - Thank you, Yvonne. I am also a lucky man when I have friends who give of their time to make a vid like this, help sustain a friendship like you do and, of course, the music! Yes, I am fortunate.....I am content.
