An amazing story of a severely abused dog who was rescued and rehabilitated. Her name, Starfish, comes from the old starfish story by Loren Eisley: "One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?" The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die." "Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't make a difference!" After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said..." I made a difference for that one." Starfish's owner was told the dog was unadoptable and should be euthanized when she was first rescued. But the owner knew they 'could make a difference to this one', and so they did. And what a difference Starfish made to those around her. She was an angel, a loving gentle soul - the little dog who could. She got the nickname 'Energizer Bunny' her last day on this earth: Minutes after she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, she went into cardiac arrest in her owner's arms. The vet performed CPR and she revived. Then she went into cardiac arrest a second time. And a third time. And a fourth time. And each time she came back to life again. The vet would pronounce her gone, and her owner would perform chest compressions, or simply rub Starfish's ear or put their finger in front of the dog's nose so she could smell the scent as she was slipping away, and she would rally back again. She would suddenly draw a breath, open her eyes, and her heart would begin beating once more. In the hours before she finally passed away peacefully in her owner's arms, Starfish's heart stopped an astounding fifteen times and she astonishingly revived each time except the last. The vet said in his entire thirty years of vet practice, he had never seen an animal fight so hard to stay alive and come back from complete cardiac arrest so many times. He'd never seen anything like it; he called her the Energizer Bunny.

Oct 25, 2008 - Yes, and she was a beautiful soul. Incidentally, she was named after "The Starfish Story" which I noticed on your channel is your favorite motivational story. Sadly, I could not save every dying animal that came to the SPCA, but "I could make a difference to this one', so I did. And what a difference she also made to me.
