Apr 2, 2008 - Thank you. Have fun with your Les Paul. It practically plays itself sometimes.

Apr 9, 2008 - keep the faith. thats cool. the pickups in the les paul custom are the same a gibson les paul. the only difference is the wood. the mahogany with maple top is no the same type of "grade" as a gibson. but epiphones r awsome!
Defector5 Says:
Apr 9, 2008 - Hey thanks for the info on the pickups. No wonder they sound so freakin great! There's alot to be said about tone woods, you're right. I hope I can afford a Gibson again someday, but till then, I'll be very happy with this baby!

Apr 21, 2008 - epiphone or gibson les paul customs have a carved mahogany top, no maple. that's one difference between a custom and a standard
Gr33nPanther Says:
Apr 21, 2008 - umm... i think u mean to say, customs & standards have a carved maple top, studios do not.

May 4, 2008 - wow great sound out of that lp u are getting.

May 9, 2008 - The PIckups aren't the same as a LP. For one thing, Gibson gives different PUPS depending on the type of LP you buy. IT's not one "general" model. Epi Customs are mock '57 classics. Gibsons will give anything from 460's to genuine 57 classics to burstbuckers. Epi's have alder tops and don't use American Mahoganey. They aren't hand cut, but machine made. The tuners, frets, and saddles aren't the same, either. Fine guitars, but not replicas of Gibson. Sustain comes from the set neck and the wood.
Defector5 Says:
May 9, 2008 - Yep, actually all true. I'd rather have my Gibson back, but these days, it's more economic to go with Epiphone. Someday, when I have an extra $3,500.00 to spend on a guitar (and my wife doesn't kill me) I will definitely buy a black custom "Gibson" Les Paul.
turmoil666 Says:
May 10, 2008 - Absolutely, man. I have the Epi Silverburst LTD Custom and it is one kick ass guitar. Cost me under 600$ w/ a hardshell. Gibson just reissued "their" Silverburst LP. It's selling for 3400$-5200$. I have played Gibson Customs before. The sound difference is not worth 4 G's. The Epi's are great guitars, and with a decent amp, nobody will know the difference anyway unless you're making records, in which case you can afford a Gibson. I was just clarifying for those who think the guitars are the same

May 10, 2008 - Customs are almost top of the food chain in the Les Paul world. I think the next step up is "Ultra." So, yes, better than Standards, Standard Plus's, Studios, 100's, Specials, cooler colors, better features, better made, better sounding. I'd suggest a 3 pickup Black Beauty from Epi. Nasty axes, 3 pups, gold hardware, built like a tank. One of the best Non-Gibsons LP's ever made. But if you're gonna spend 600, might as well spend 850 and get a base model vintage mahogany from Gibson.

May 28, 2008 - awesome comparison and review, i was trying to decide between the epi lp standard and the custom, your review was the best one ive found in regards to actually showing how a custom sounds and plays
Defector5 Says:
May 28, 2008 - Thanks. The EPI LP Standard is REALLY nice and will treat you well. I just had to have the custom. It's a visual thing for me. It just looks as good as it sounds, which says a lot. Someone described it as the "tuxedo of guitars."

Jun 11, 2008 - DEFECTOR5 you have to be kidding when you say the les paul has a better tone than a strat. i'v been playing strats since 1973 and i'v played a few pauls not even close. how long have you been playing?
Defector5 Says:
Jun 11, 2008 - No, I don't mean that it has better tone, I REALLY don't mean that at all. I meant that in the context of heavy distortion. LP Humbuckers just seem to handle that type of overdriven tone a lot better than the run-of-the-mill Strat single coils. I have 4 Strats and only one Les Paul. Overall, I prefer the tone of a Stratocaster, but not for particularly heavy overdrive/distortion. I have been playing on and off for 25 years or so, but have only made real progress in the past couple of years.

Jun 11, 2008 - ok buddy thanks for the reply

Jun 19, 2008 - Most of the 400-600 dollar les paul customs are the same as the standards, but have different paint jobs. Your paying for the finish if your getting a custom.
dukegdl Says:
Jun 21, 2008 - Im agree, the distortion is really better on the les paul.
the1tobzster Says:
Jul 25, 2008 - Les Pauls own Strats!!!!!!
Defector5 Says:
Jul 25, 2008 - I can certainly understand where you're coming from, especially when we're talking about Gibsons. It's kind of like MAC v.s. PC isn't it? There's just some things a Les Paul can do (Epiphone or Gibson) that Strats are not designed to do. I may get another Les Paul if my wife lets me. Peace.
Defector5 Says:
Mar 12, 2008 - I think the standard and custom are pretty close, if not the same as far as sound and playability. The Custom just looks much better.
