Another spectacular event that you will witness during the Thaipusam celebration is the breaking of coconuts on the streets. This signifies humility and the release on one's ego. Also the belief is mostly as Lord Muruga will be passing their streets, a clean road also signifies their sincerity and purity of one's effort. Many Hindus and non Hindu devotees participated breaking coconuts to fulfill their vows. Some loved ones who are far away even had close relatives break coconuts as their wishes or vows has been fulfilled. Really, it is no small feats. Try watching one, I did. Choose a big pile and watch them in action. From being real excited waiting for the opportunity to break the coconut to feeling wobbly after 30 coconuts smashing. That is when the well wishes had their fun. Caucasians watch in amazement and awe. Sometimes with encouragement, they join in the celebration as well. Photographers had a field day trying to catch different angles and snaps up beautiful expressions. Thaipusam is an event not to be missed.
