The Spring equinox (on or around March 21) marks the start of the New Year according to the Iranian calendar. Dating back to Zoroastrian times, Noruz (also transliterated as Nowruz, Navroze, Nevruz, Noruj, among other local spellings) is celebrated today in several countries around Iran and beyond, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. The festival is also commemorated by the Parsi Zoroastrians of South Asia. Celebrants set up the "haft seen" table, which includes seven specific items starting with the letter 'S' or Sīn in Persian.
