This time we've got the upgraded engine and the new cage to test. Unfortunately the engine gave us no more than 8330rpm which equates to about 4hp and only 28kg thrust according to the prop data sheet?!?!?!? The engine is suppose to provide around 6hp......... I've contacted the supplier for advice. Also, we didn't use super-unleaded and the petrol had sat in the can for several weeks prior to mixing so the octane rating could be a factor. Maybe the new engine is still 'tight' and might need more 'running in'. If anybody could offer some advice it would be very much appreciated. Ideally I don't want to go down the nitrous oxide route and I've already tried mixing nitro(RC fuel) with the petrol but it separates. Could the 'tuned pipe' be the problem? Does anyone know of a decent exhaust that will liberate the extra horses???

Jul 9, 2008 - y dont you check the thrust against some weighing scales

lookupparagliding Says:

Jul 9, 2008 - We might do that again. We used bathroom scales when we did the Eggmotor Test Runs 2. This was with the old engine and untuned exhaust. It wasn't a brilliant test rig and the reading was lower than the data sheet.

Jul 14, 2008 - You will probably gain about half a horsepower once the motor is run in. You will also gain about another 500rpm once the motor has freed up.

Jul 15, 2008 - Hi Redbaran42, we should probably get upto the 32-33kg mark then. We are also going to try some flexible exhaust pipe lengths to see if we can get the power band down to around 9,500rpm. This should get us the 40kg+ we are hoping for. Many Thanks for your input, Rob.

Jul 24, 2008 - Wow that thing looks smart. Only point i would make is why have the fuel tank over the engine? Such a dodgy thing if it went wrong? Whats the weight of the setup so far?

lookupparagliding Says:

Jul 24, 2008 - hello 0eden0, I needed gravity feed for the fuel because unlike the majority of paramotors, the minimoto engine isn't fitted with a carb that has a built in pump. I am considering buying a performance carb which should give me another 0.5 to 0.8hp. If it's a walbro or something similar then the pump would help make for a safer design. I think the weight so far is 19kg(empty). the 'diamond' engine frame is made of thick box section so I could save a kilo or two on any future motors. cheers, rob.

Aug 19, 2008 - have you tried with twin props on the same hub that would give some more thrust without much extra weight

lookupparagliding Says:

Aug 19, 2008 - Hello, not thought of doing that ;o) At over £400 for the prop I can't afford another one at the moment. I think the extra drag created would lower the engine rpm too much. Cheers, Rob.
