Or, say that - it may work out that first world become second world, second world stay where they are, and third world move up to second world status. But, then, I do not believe that will happen. Jul 23, 2008 - The banks are reporting earnings, so long as they are earning money the market will ignore writedowns at this stage. Consider though that writedowns give banks a tax break on earnings, so thier earnings are actually 20-30% above ordinary growth because there is no tax, a writedown brings tax bill down, so it has a positive effect on earnings. Plus a writedown can be written UP as not all of the money is gone for good, though a lot obviously is.
