Voluntaries for double organ, implying works written with two manuals, were popular in England from around 1640. Purcell's survives as a "unicum" in British Library Add. MS 31468, an organ book compiled between the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a sectional work, introducing a repeated-note subject first in imitation then in decorated form in treble and bass against a flowing accompaniment. A second melody is subjected to the same treatment but this time with an imitative conclusion. The Voluntary is included in the CD "Purcell Collection" which comprises 8 Suites for Harpsichord and 2 Voluntaries for Organ. The performers are Colin Tilney, spinet and Simon Preston, organ.
