An Australian submarine has sunk a decommissioned US warship during a test of a new torpedo. The MK 48 Mod 7 Common Broadband Sonar System torpedo was fired from HMAS Waller during the Rim of Pacific 2008 naval exercise off the coast of Hawaii. BBC News: Iran has unveiled a rocket torpedo which has a range of about 7,500 yards and can fly through the water at more than 230 miles an hour. It achieves this high speed by producing a high-pressure stream of bubbles from its nose, which coats the weapon in a thin layer of gas. It flies underwater inside a giant "envelope" of gas bubbles in a process called "supercavitation" There is no defense against a weapon of this sort.

Jul 27, 2008 - Iran doesnt have 100MTs. but they dot need them

tnichols321 Says:

Jul 27, 2008 - they dont have nukes. How are they going to kill hundreds of millions? Their ground troops (which is pretty much all they have) are bound inside of their country by the mountains that entirely surround and defend them. Iran will deal its damage to millions economically by cutting off the straight of hormuz

xxDaddyXx Says:

Jul 27, 2008 - I mean although you are right that we should keep our servicemen and women in our prayers, I mean those torpedos arent nukes so shouldnt our military already know about and anticipate a counterattack with those weapons?

Twhupfold Says:

Jul 28, 2008 - They have extensive enrichment programs, and the actual mechanics of a nuclear bomb are very simple. They may not have nukes -this second-, but they have all the facilities they need and are working hard to improve and extend them. If they are attacked, nuclear weapons are a very real possibility (unlike with countries like the USA, who, although rather quick to invade, would not use their nuclear weapons.)

Twhupfold Says:

Jul 28, 2008 - I know they don't have access to 100MT bombs; my point, as I said, was that the technology exists for them (and some countries likely have them). The bombs that go into several MT's are hydrogen bombs rather than just nuclear bombs, so it is yet to be seen whether or not Iran has the capability to create a hydrogen bomb, but they have the facilities, technology, and knowledge to create nuclear bombs, as well as the openly (and frequently) expressed intention to use such force.

Twhupfold Says:

Jul 28, 2008 - It's actually quite difficult to protect a ship against a torpedo. Perhaps some secret technology exists that can do it somehow, but if it is a -modern- torpedo, it is quite possibly a supercavitation rocket torpedo, and they can travel at hundreds of km/h underwater, obviously making them a very potent weapon that's hard to protect from.

pelagic6 Says:

Jul 28, 2008 - I'd say it was quite effective, how about a nuke torpedo into a fleet of ships aimed at the aircraft carrier? That would also be quite effective...

bibleortraditions Says:

Jul 30, 2008 - Right. And at those speeds, they don't even have to detonate to be effective.

Twhupfold Says:

Jul 31, 2008 - If it was aimed directly at the hull of the ship and had an armour-piercing style tip, then perhaps, but usually torpedoes are detonated underneath the ship, breaking it's back as you said in the video.

klegster Says:

Jul 31, 2008 - There are figures on antiwar (.) com, it is an up to date tally. I always wonder why we US citizens think it is ok to bomb the so-called enemy and think nothing of their deaths or the truth behind what is going on. I get upset when others think it is so wrong for other countries to have weapons when the USA has the most weapons in the world, why can USA have them and no one else? What is a weapon of mass destruction? look in a store, there are hammers and stuff, those can be and are weapons.

KarenSuperstar1975 Says:

Jul 31, 2008 - I wouldnt worry so much about Iran, Iraq, etc. The people running our government are the biggest enemy of the American people, as well as the liberal media. These countries are nothing. Iraq had the 4th biggest military in the world and they ran away like little girls. Just worry about your govt officials, dont worry about Iran!!!!

madzndean Says:

Jul 31, 2008 - Good video thanks...

Jive51 Says:

Aug 2, 2008 - The rocket torpedo was made by soviet union, secretly. I don't understand how it is possible for iran to have it !!!

coppertop1964 Says:

Aug 3, 2008 - good video.

crimson005 Says:

Aug 3, 2008 - Man the US Navy seems to really hate their old Spruance class destroyers, they're sinking them like crazy!

LadyGreenEyes964 Says:

Aug 5, 2008 - Because Russia is so poor these days they will sell anything to anyone. They really aren't our friends, either, even now.

TexasT3ch Says:

Aug 5, 2008 - It's so much deeper than that. Russian and China awoke to the underlying plan of the illuminati. Bird flu- China Take a look into our World banking systems. HAARP. Please look and do your own research.

RaverRozza Says:

Aug 28, 2008 - the tone of this video and all these comments are laughable!!!

Exodus314IAM Says:

Sep 1, 2008 - Keep in mind this ship was set up to sink. All the water tight compartments are open and they actually cut holes inside to make sure it sinks and sinks fast. In real combat first no one would get close enogh to launch something at a US Ship. If some how they did sneek in, it would take a few of these torpedos to sink a US war ship. The odds are very very low of that happening. Good cool video never the less! God Bless

briquetaverne Says:

Sep 6, 2008 - Here I am thinking about buying a boat for as cheap as possible because I never seem to have enough to buy what i want ...and "Poof" thousands of tax dollars worth of steel and manpower are put to the bottom of the sea in seconds...what a world!

Knudjensen54 Says:

Sep 13, 2008 - Hi, I love the intro from Braveheart ;-) Very scary stuff, the human race is getting very near perfection in the Art of War. In the future they will say we did good in killing, but poorly in loving our fellow Man. Gos is looking down on Us and He is NOT amused.

VivaMydick Says:

Sep 19, 2008 - Russians have best torpedoes going 500 miles an hour ships have no chance

PeterWestergar Says:

Sep 22, 2008 - Iran is backed by Russian technology

ALIDH88 Says:

Oct 1, 2008 - gotta love the music from the Gladiator movie (or is it Rome Total war? :P )

hougy6 Says:

Oct 7, 2008 - No they don't, they have their own issues. One being them having to within a certain DETECTABLE range to even fire one off.
