We discovered Capoeira when my daughter, Mia, was six. This is an video I made three years ago of the Children's Capoeira Festival organised by her teachers, Amazonas Capoeira in North London. Capoeira was a martial art that evolved out of the slave trade in Brazil when slaves created the dance-like acrobating fighting when their masters banned fighting. I thnk that's what it is anyway. The kids adored it - they learned acrobatic moves, somersaults, a lot of breakdancing moves (Mia could even spin on her head!), and they played cool rhythms on Brazilian native instruments. Why do the Brazilians have such a monopoly of cool in culture? Sadly once Mia took up Gymnastics the training regime no longer gave her time to do Capoeira as well. But how we loved it. Maybe someday
