BARACK OBAMA WHO IS HE? • Barack Obama Jr. was born to Barack Obama Sr. and Ann Durham in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. • His father was born and raised in a small village in Kenya, where he herded goats. • His mother grew up in a small town in Kansas. • His parents met while attending the University of Hawaii. • Obama Sr. eventually returned to Kenya and left Barack Jr. and his mother in Hawaii. • Barack and his mother also lived in Indonesia for several years. • In 1983 Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University in New York. • After a move to Chicago in 1985, Barack Obama became a community organizer who wanted to improve the living conditions of poor neighborhoods plagues with crime and high unemployment. Unsatisfied with the minimal success of this campaign, Mr. Obama realized a change in our law and policies was the only way to truly improve the lives of people in similar communities across the nation. • The first African American president of the Harvard Law Review, he earned a law degree from Harvard in 1991. • He later returned to Chicago to practice law as a Civil Rights Lawyer and teach Constitutional Law. • He served on the Illinois State Senate for 8 years. • He became the 3rd African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the US state Senate in 2004. • It is obvious that growing up in different places with people who had differing ideas, has truly animated Senator Barack Obama's political journey. • Mr. Obama believes that the ability to unite people around a politics of purpose that clearly puts the challenges everyday Americans ahead of partisan calculations and political gain. • In the Illinois State Senate, he worked with both Democratic and republican to create programs like the State Earned Income Tax Credit. In 3 years, this particular program provided 100 million dollars in tax cuts to families across the state. • Senator Obama was noteworthy in pushing through the expansion of Early Childhood Education. • Mr. Obama also worked with law enforcement officials to require the video taping of interrogations in all capital cases, after a number of inmates on death row were found to be innocent. • In the US senate, his first law was passed with Rep. Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent. • Mr. Obama is a member of the Veteran' Affairs Committee, fighting to help Illinois Vets get the Disability pay they were promised, while also working to prepare the VA for the thousands of Vets who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan. • Senator Barack Obama traveled to Russia to begin a new generation of non proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world, having recognized the terrorist threat poses by weapons of mass destruction. • Mr. Obama is currently working to bring auto companies, unions, farmers, businesses and politicians of both parties together to promote greater use of alternative fuel and higher fuel standards in our cars. • Presidential hopeful, Senator Barack Obama continues to spell out the issues that will define American in the 21st century, whether it is the role of faith in our politics, the poverty exposed in Katrina or the genocide in Darfur. • Mr. Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and two daughters Malia, age 9 and Sasha, age 7, reside on Chicago's Southside.
